Chandigarh: Internal friction within the Punjab Congress has intensified following the appointment of new office-bearers, prompting Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon to publicly extend an invitation to former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Dhillon stated that Channi would be warmly welcomed into the Bharatiya Janata Party should he decide to make the switch, asserting that anyone who joins the BJP finds political satisfaction.
The remarks coincided with a significant show of strength by Channi, who convened a meeting in Morinda attended by more than 50 former ministers and former MLAs. The gathering highlights the growing discontent within the Congress ranks over recent organizational decisions by the party high command. Dhillon took the opportunity to critique the opposition, claiming that the persistent infighting has deeply disappointed grassroots Congress workers and left the party’s political future in Punjab highly uncertain.
In addition to targeting the Congress, the state BJP chief launched a sharp attack against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government. Dhillon accused the AAP administration of failing to deliver on its key governance commitments, specifically pointing to the unfulfilled promises of providing monthly financial assistance of 1,000 to 1,500 rupees to women. While the political maneuvering has put the spotlight firmly on Channi’s next steps, neither the former Chief Minister nor the Congress leadership has issued an official response to the BJP’s invitation.
