Tragically Overloaded Passenger Bus Plunges into Balochistan Ravine, Killing 40

Balochistan: A horrific transit disaster has claimed the lives of at least 40 people and left eight others severely injured after an overloaded passenger bus skidded off the Sherani-Zhob highway and plunged into a deep ravine in the Danasar area. The ill-fated vehicle was travelling from Quetta to Islamabad when it traversed the notorious border corridor connecting Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The incident has once again exposed a glaring absence of highway safety barriers and structural safeguards on the high-risk mountainous routes of Pakistan.

According to the Medical Emergency Response Centre, disaster response teams faced immense challenges while pulling 40 bodies from the mangled wreckage. The surviving passengers, all sustaining critical injuries, were rushed to the trauma facility in Zhob. The sudden influx of casualties forced authorities to abruptly declare a medical emergency at healthcare facilities across Sherani and Dera Ismail Khan, heavily straining a regional healthcare system that is poorly equipped to handle large-scale disasters.

A massive emergency mobilisation was launched at the remote crash site, deploying six ambulances, 12 emergency medical technicians, and 10 light transport vehicles. Sherani Deputy Commissioner Hazrat Wali Kakar stated that local administrative units from Sherani and neighbouring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rushed personnel to the scene to assist in the recovery and transport of the victims.

The tragedy has also highlighted systemic operational failures and a severe lack of regulatory oversight within the commercial transit sector. Deputy Commissioner Kakar revealed that the bus had departed Quetta with 36 passengers but became heavily overloaded midway through the journey. Additional travellers boarded the vehicle after being transferred from another commercial bus that had broken down along the route.

A joint rescue operation involving Rescue 1122, the Frontier Corps, local police, and district officials managed to secure the site despite the difficult mountainous terrain and poor local infrastructure. As public scrutiny intensifies over persistent governance deficits and public safety accountability, administrative officials confirmed that an official probe has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fatal crash.
