Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is likely to remain under the influence of unsettled weather for the next two days, with light to moderate rainfall forecast in parts of the state. The prolonged monsoon has already caused extensive damage, with losses estimated at around Rs 1,033 crore, according to government figures.

The Public Works Department has reported the largest share of the financial damage, with losses estimated at nearly ₹750 crore. Roads and other public infrastructure have been badly affected by rain-triggered landslides, floods and other weather-related incidents.

The monsoon has also taken a heavy toll on human lives. As many as 205 people have died in the state so far this season, with road accidents accounting for 121 fatalities. Several other deaths have been linked to rain-related incidents and natural disasters.

Residential and commercial properties have also suffered considerable damage. Government data shows that 85 houses have been completely destroyed, while another 323 have sustained partial damage. Fourteen shops have also been affected.

Rain Likely on August 20 and 21

The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the state on August 20 and 21. With the possibility of landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas, residents have been advised to exercise caution while travelling and during periods of intense rain.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on areas that have remained vulnerable to weather-related incidents throughout the monsoon.

Weather Likely to Improve from August 22

A gradual weakening of monsoon activity is expected from August 22. The weather department has not issued any warning for the period from August 22 to 25, although isolated rainfall could still occur in parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Interestingly, despite the extensive damage caused by individual spells of heavy rain, the state has received less rainfall than its seasonal average so far.

Between June 1 and August 19, Himachal Pradesh recorded 500.4 mm of rain against the normal figure of 535.4 mm, resulting in a 7% rainfall deficit.

The figures underline the uneven nature of the monsoon in the hill state, where even rainfall below the seasonal average has been accompanied by destructive incidents involving landslides, floods and damage to infrastructure and homes.
