Ufa (Russia): An Indian medical student enrolled at Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa, Russia, sustained minor injuries during a recent Ukrainian drone strike on the city. The Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that the student is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Officials from the mission are maintaining close contact with both the injured national and regional authorities to ensure all necessary assistance is provided during this time.
The incident occurred amidst a significant escalation in long-range drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine. According to regional authorities, Russian air defence systems intercepted four out of six drones targeting the Republic of Bashkortostan overnight. However, the strikes still managed to inflict damage, with one drone sparking a fire at a local oil refinery unit undergoing maintenance. Another drone struck a residential complex in northern Ufa, damaging parked vehicles and shattering windows on the building’s upper floors.
Located more than a thousand kilometres from the Ukrainian border, Bashkortostan serves as a crucial hub for the Russian oil-processing industry and has increasingly become a target for aerial strikes. The injury to the student has heightened ongoing anxieties regarding the safety of thousands of Indian nationals, particularly medical students, residing in the conflict zone.
The Indian government has continuously engaged with both Moscow and Kyiv to secure the safety of its citizens, consistently advocating for dialogue and restraint. These diplomatic efforts were recently underscored on July 30, when External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. During their conversation, Jaishankar firmly condemned attacks impacting commercial shipping and Indian seafarers, reinforcing New Delhi’s stance that such actions by any party remain entirely unacceptable.
