New Delhi: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has endorsed President Donald Trump’s renewed push for stricter voter identification requirements in the United States, citing the scale of India’s 2024 general election as an example.

Gor shared Trump’s post on social media and described the US President’s argument as “absolutely correct”. He highlighted the figure of 646 million people who cast their votes in India’s last Lok Sabha election and backed Trump’s call for Congress to pass the proposed SAVE America Act.

Trump had recently referred to a reported conversation involving India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while making his case for photo identification requirements in American elections. In his post, Trump pointed to India’s electoral process and contrasted it with the absence of a uniform federal requirement for valid photo identification in US elections.

Gor echoed that comparison, writing that all voters in India’s last election were required to have identification and urging the US Congress to approve the legislation.

India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election saw around 646 million people cast their ballots out of roughly 980 million registered voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously highlighted the scale of the exercise while discussing India’s electoral system with podcaster Lex Fridman.

The comments have brought India’s election system into the ongoing US debate over voter identification and election security. Trump has repeatedly argued that stricter identification requirements are necessary to strengthen confidence in American elections.

The proposed SAVE America Act is part of that broader effort by the Trump administration and its allies to push for tighter voting requirements, including identification measures.

Gor’s remarks underline Washington’s interest in drawing comparisons between the two countries’ electoral systems, particularly around voter identification and the management of elections involving hundreds of millions of voters.
