Mumbai: CCTV footage from the IIT-Bombay campus has emerged as an important piece of evidence in the Crime Branch investigation into the death of 22-year-old student Sahil Wakode, who was found dead in his hostel room.
According to sources cited in the investigation, the footage shows Sahil inside an examination hall shortly before he left the venue. Investigators are now examining his movements during the period between the examination and his return to the hostel room.
What Does The CCTV Footage Show?
Sources said that between 12:30 pm and 12:45 pm, when around 15 minutes were still left for the examination, Sahil was allegedly seen bending down and looking at an object kept in his pocket. A professor subsequently questioned him and took him aside from the other students, according to the sources.
The footage is now being examined to establish the sequence of events inside the examination hall and what happened immediately after Sahil left the venue.
Sahil Wakode Seen Entering Hostel Room
After leaving the examination hall, Sahil was allegedly seen walking through the IIT-Bombay campus before reaching his hostel. Sources said he entered his hostel room at around 1:25 pm. The CCTV footage reportedly indicates that he did not leave the room after entering it.
Investigators are examining the footage to reconstruct Sahil’s movements and establish a timeline of the events leading up to his death.
Crime Branch Examines Circumstances Around Death
The CCTV footage has assumed significance as the Crime Branch continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Investigators are looking at the available footage and other material to understand what happened between Sahil’s interaction with the professor during the examination and his return to the hostel.
The development comes amid scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding the death and the institute’s handling of the matter. Student protests have also brought attention to concerns surrounding student welfare and campus policies.
