New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a significant aviation milestone after its IL-76MD heavy-lift transport aircraft successfully landed at Nyoma in Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet, setting a new world record for the aircraft.
The landing is being described as the highest-altitude landing ever carried out by an IL-76MD anywhere in the world. The achievement highlights the aircraft’s ability to operate in challenging high-altitude conditions.
The successful operation also demonstrated the exceptional flying skills, technical expertise and coordination of the IAF crew, who executed the landing at the strategically important airfield.
The feat marks another step forward in strengthening India’s military logistics and strategic airlift capabilities, particularly in remote and mountainous regions where difficult terrain and extreme altitude pose major operational challenges.
The achievement underlines the continued relevance of the IL-76MD in India’s transport fleet and reflects the Indian Air Force’s efforts to expand its operational reach in demanding environments.
With this landmark landing, the IAF has once again demonstrated its ability to push aviation limits while reinforcing the country’s preparedness to support operations in strategically sensitive areas.
