Canada Marriage Fraud Warning: Why IRCC Is Cautioning Against ‘Relationships Of Convenience’

Ottawa: Canada has renewed its warning against marriage fraud as immigration authorities step up efforts to detect relationships entered into primarily to obtain immigration status. The advisory from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) asks Canadian citizens and permanent residents to be cautious before sponsoring a spouse or partner, particularly when a relationship develops quickly or the prospective partner is unwilling to share details about their background.

The warning has particular relevance in Punjab, where several alleged cases involving marriage, overseas migration and financial disputes have reached the police and courts in recent years.

What Is Marriage Fraud In Canada?

IRCC describes a “relationship of convenience” as a marriage, common-law partnership or conjugal relationship entered into primarily to help a foreign national immigrate to Canada rather than being based on a genuine relationship.

Canadian immigration officers use document checks and interviews with applicants and sponsors to identify potentially fraudulent relationships. The department also warns that Canadian citizens or permanent residents involved in such arrangements for immigration purposes may face criminal charges.

For a foreign national, entering a false marriage to gain entry to Canada can result in a visa refusal and a five-year ban on travelling to Canada, according to IRCC.

Why Punjab Has Seen Marriage-Linked Immigration Disputes

In some cases reported from Punjab, families have allegedly spent substantial amounts on a prospective bride’s education, travel or settlement expenses with the expectation that the marriage would eventually help the groom move to Canada.

A 2025 Punjab and Haryana High Court case involved allegations that a woman had cleared IELTS and that her prospective husband’s family agreed to finance her move to Canada as part of a matrimonial arrangement. The case included allegations of payments running into lakhs of rupees and later became the subject of criminal proceedings.

More recently, a September 2026 report from Moga described a case in which a woman allegedly died after a dispute involving her husband’s move to Canada, marriage and money. Police registered a case against her husband and in-laws, according to the report.

These cases do not establish that marriage fraud is increasing across Punjab, but they illustrate the kinds of financial and legal disputes that can emerge when marriage and immigration expectations become intertwined.

Canada Tightens Focus On Immigration Fraud

IRCC’s broader 2026 program-integrity framework identifies relationships of convenience and fraudulent applications among the issues authorities are working to detect and disrupt.

The department has also advised people not to enter marriages arranged primarily for immigration benefits and reminds sponsors that sponsoring a spouse carries financial obligations even if the relationship later breaks down.

At the same time, IRCC has clarified that people facing domestic abuse do not have to remain in an abusive relationship to retain their permanent resident status in Canada.
