Ontario: A Canadian citizen of Punjabi origin has been sentenced to 20 years in a United States federal prison after admitting to operating a large-scale drug trafficking network that smuggled hundreds of kilograms of narcotics from the US into Canada.
The sentence was handed down by a federal court in California, where 63-year-old Guramrit Sidhu, a resident of Brampton, Ontario, was found guilty of leading a continuing criminal enterprise involved in international drug trafficking. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed the sentencing, while the US Attorney’s Office released details of the case.
Sidhu had entered a guilty plea earlier this year, acknowledging his role in coordinating the movement of massive quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine across the US-Canada border. He has remained in federal custody since his extradition from Canada in October 2024.
Court documents revealed that investigators linked Sidhu to a sophisticated trafficking operation that functioned for more than two years. Authorities alleged that he supervised the purchase of narcotics in the United States before arranging their transportation into Canada through commercial transport vehicles.
During one phase of the investigation, law enforcement intercepted multiple shipments allegedly organised by Sidhu. Officials said the seized consignments included more than 850 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine with an estimated wholesale value running into millions of dollars.
Investigators further stated that Sidhu used coded communication methods and pre-arranged identification systems for couriers involved in the deliveries. Once the consignments crossed the border, members of the organisation allegedly collected the drugs from designated pickup locations for further distribution.
The case formed part of a broader international investigation targeting cross-border organised crime. Several other individuals connected to the network have already pleaded guilty and received prison sentences of varying lengths in the United States.
Authorities credited the investigation to coordinated efforts involving the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, US Customs and Border Protection, and law enforcement agencies in Mexico. Additional assistance was provided by federal narcotics and homeland security authorities.
US officials also acknowledged the cooperation of Canadian authorities in securing Sidhu’s arrest and extradition, describing the case as an example of international collaboration against organised drug trafficking.
The conviction marks one of the significant outcomes of an investigation into transnational narcotics networks operating between North America, with officials reiterating their commitment to dismantling criminal organisations involved in large-scale cross-border smuggling.
