Chandigarh: Commuters in Chandigarh have been advised to plan their journeys carefully on Friday as a large gathering of farmers is expected in the city following a protest call by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan).
Farmers from different parts of Punjab are scheduled to assemble at the Exhibition Ground in Sector 34 to press their demands. The demonstration is expected to draw a significant number of participants, prompting the Chandigarh Police to strengthen security arrangements and implement traffic management measures around the venue.
To minimise congestion, police have issued an advisory asking motorists to avoid roads surrounding Sector 34 during the protest and make use of alternate routes wherever possible. Traffic personnel have been deployed at key intersections to regulate vehicle movement and assist commuters.
Officials said additional security forces will remain stationed in and around the protest site to maintain law and order and ensure that the event proceeds peacefully. Barricades have also been installed at strategic locations to manage the movement of protesters and traffic.
The administration has urged residents to cooperate with traffic personnel and follow diversions announced by the police. Public transport users have also been advised to factor in possible delays due to increased movement in the area.
Authorities expect traffic pressure to remain high for several hours as participants arrive from various districts of Punjab. Police said they will continue monitoring the situation and make adjustments to traffic arrangements if required to reduce inconvenience to the public.
Residents have been requested to stay updated through official traffic advisories before travelling through central Chandigarh during the day.
