BUENOS AIRES — India and Argentina have agreed to significantly broaden their economic and strategic partnership across critical minerals, energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and emerging technologies following high-level bilateral trade discussions. The decision came during the fourth meeting of the India-Argentina Joint Trade Committee (JTC) held at Palacio San Martín in Buenos Aires, where both nations reviewed progress on the strategic roadmap established during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Argentina in 2025.

The talks were co-chaired by Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Argentine Secretary for International Economic Relations Fernando Brun. Commercial ties between the two nations have seen rapid expansion, with bilateral trade surpassing 6.5 billion US dollars in 2025 after registering an annual growth rate exceeding 17 per cent. The surge has established India as Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner, prompting both governments to explore further diversification of the bilateral trade basket while reducing non-tariff barriers to foster balanced market access.

Critical mineral cooperation featured prominently in the dialogue, spotlighting the ongoing engagement of Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) in Argentina’s lithium reserves. Both delegations reviewed investment prospects in mining, clean energy, and infrastructure to bolster global supply chain resilience. Alongside mineral exploration, the two sides advanced discussions on expanding market access for Indian agricultural produce, with technical evaluations regarding sanitary and phytosanitary standards progressing for onions, dairy products, grapes, potatoes, bananas, and pulses.

Pharmaceutical sector collaboration also achieved notable momentum, with Argentina committing to work toward elevating India from Annex II to Annex I under its national pharmaceutical regulatory framework. This regulatory shift is set to lower market entry barriers for Indian healthcare and generic medicine exporters. Beyond traditional commerce, both countries identified frontier sectors for future joint ventures, including 5G telecommunications, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, aviation, and space technology.

The governmental meetings culminated in a broader bilateral business forum, bringing together public sector representatives and industry leaders from across agriculture, mining, finance, healthcare, and digital services to translate diplomatic pacts into direct commercial investments.
