Donald Trump Calls Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ as Canada-US Tensions Escalate

Washington: US President Donald Trump has sparked another diplomatic row with Canada after moving to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in official US federal usage, adding a fresh cultural dimension to the ongoing tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

The move concerns one of North America’s five Great Lakes and comes amid an increasingly strained relationship between Washington and Ottawa, including disputes over tariffs and cross-border trade.

Trump’s decision does not, however, give the United States authority to alter the name used by Canada or international organisations. The change applies specifically to how the lake is referred to by the US federal government.

Canada Rejects the New Name

Canada has made clear that it does not intend to adopt the new terminology.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a pointed response, highlighted the longstanding history behind the name Lake Ontario. He noted that the name predates both the creation of Canada as a federation and the American Declaration of Independence.

In a statement shared following Trump’s announcement, Carney stressed that Canadians would continue to call the body of water Lake Ontario.

The reference also underlined the lake’s Indigenous linguistic origins. The name is derived from the Wendat word Ontarí’io, traditionally associated with descriptions of the lake’s size and beauty.

New York Also Sticks With Lake Ontario

The dispute is not confined to Ottawa.

Lake Ontario forms part of the international boundary between Canada and the United States, with New York State bordering the lake on the American side. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also indicated that the state will continue using the established name.

The disagreement therefore creates a distinction between federal terminology in Washington and the name used by Canadian authorities, New York State and other institutions.

Another Flashpoint in Canada-US Relations

The naming controversy comes against the backdrop of broader disagreements between Trump and the Canadian government over trade and economic policy.

The two countries share one of the world’s most extensive bilateral trading relationships, and tariff measures introduced during the dispute have affected billions of dollars worth of goods moving across the border.

Against that backdrop, the decision over Lake Ontario’s name has taken on significance beyond geography, with Ottawa viewing the traditional name as part of Canada’s historical and cultural identity.

For now, the lake has effectively acquired two competing labels depending on which side of the border—and which level of government—is doing the naming. While Washington may use “Lake America” for federal purposes, Canada and New York continue to recognise it as Lake Ontario, the name that has been in use for more than four centuries.
