New Delhi: The Indian Army’s Assam Regiment has won a Gold award at Exercise Cambrian Patrol 2026 in Wales, United Kingdom, earning a place among the top-performing teams in one of the world’s most demanding military patrolling exercises.
The exercise, held from October 2 to 12, brought together more than 100 teams from around the world. The Indian contingent was among 10 teams awarded Gold, with its performance reflecting endurance, tactical proficiency, leadership and teamwork.
Announcing the achievement on Tuesday, the Indian Army described the result as a testament to the “Yoddha Spirit”, highlighting how rigorous training and battlefield skills translate into success on the international stage.
What Is Exercise Cambrian Patrol?
Exercise Cambrian Patrol is a British Army-hosted military exercise held in Wales. It brings together teams from the UK and other countries to assess their fieldcraft, leadership, navigation, physical endurance and ability to make decisions under pressure.
The exercise is designed around realistic military scenarios rather than a conventional sporting format. Patrols are assessed throughout the mission, with performance judged against established soldiering standards.
The event has been running for more than six decades and is regarded as a major test of military patrolling skills.
Why Is Cambrian Patrol Considered So Tough?
Cambrian Patrol challenges soldiers physically and mentally. Teams must navigate difficult terrain, carry heavy equipment and complete demanding military tasks while working under pressure.
The British Army’s assessment framework includes navigation, reconnaissance, casualty drills, tactical conduct, communications, leadership and physical and mental robustness.
For participating troops, success depends not only on individual fitness but also on coordination, sound judgement and the ability to function as a team when conditions become difficult.
What Does The Gold Award Mean?
Under the British Army’s published assessment criteria for Cambrian Patrol 2026, a Gold award requires a team to score at least 75 per cent of the total available points, with no less than 65 per cent in any individual assessed task.
The award therefore reflects performance across the exercise’s assessed military skills rather than simply finishing the patrol.
The Indian Army’s Assam Regiment was among the 10 teams to receive Gold in the 2026 edition, competing against more than 100 participating teams.
What Is The Assam Regiment?
The Assam Regiment was raised on June 15, 1941, in Shillong, Meghalaya, during the Second World War. The regiment has a long history of service and draws personnel from communities across northeastern India.
Its latest international achievement adds to the Indian Army’s record at Cambrian Patrol. Indian teams have previously received Gold awards through units including the Gorkha Rifles and the Garhwal Rifles.
The 2026 result highlights the regiment’s performance in an exercise that tests practical soldiering, teamwork and leadership in challenging conditions.
Did The Indian Army’s Bhairav Battalion Win Gold?
Reports published on Tuesday identified the Assam Regiment as the Indian Army unit that won Gold. Some defence-focused reports have further identified the winning team as its Bhairav battalion.
However, the Army’s initial public announcement highlighted the Assam Regiment without specifying the battalion. The mention of “Bhairav” on a soldier’s shoulder epaulette in an official photograph has also drawn attention to the unit’s possible involvement.
The battalion-level identification should be treated separately from the confirmed Gold award to the Assam Regiment unless the Army formally confirms the specific unit.
