New Delhi: Indian Railways has achieved a significant financial milestone by surpassing its scrap monetisation and Non-Fare Revenue (NFR) targets for the fiscal year 2025–26. According to official data released on Monday, April 20, 2026, the national transporter recorded scrap sales worth ₹6,813.86 crore, significantly exceeding the annual target of ₹6,000 crore. This performance continues a strong upward trend from the previous fiscal year, where the Railways clocked ₹6,641.78 crore against a target of ₹5,400 crore. The systematic disposal of unserviceable materials from depots, yards, and workshops has not only unlocked hidden asset value but also freed up critical operational space and promoted environmental sustainability through large-scale recycling.
Parallel to scrap sales, Non-Fare Revenue has emerged as a vital pillar of financial resilience, allowing for infrastructure upgrades without increasing passenger ticket fares. Earnings from NFR—which includes station redevelopment, advertising, and the commercial utilization of vacant land—reached ₹777.76 crore in FY 2025–26. This represents a 107.9 per cent achievement against the target of ₹720.85 crore and reflects a dramatic 168 per cent increase since FY 2021–22. The additional funds are being reinvested into passenger-centric amenities, including enhanced station cleanliness, digital service lounges, and advanced safety systems.
Several innovative initiatives across Zonal Railways have fueled this growth. Key developments include the establishment of 120 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) at stations to provide affordable medicines and the allocation of 22 premium single-brand retail outlets. Furthermore, the introduction of modern facilities such as high-speed Wi-Fi co-working spaces, digital lounges, and multi-level car parking has transformed railway stations into productive hubs. By diversifying its income streams beyond traditional freight and passenger tickets, Indian Railways is positioning itself as a more modern, self-sustaining transport network.
