KOLKATA — Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu First Information Report against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, alongside event organizers, for allegedly violating Calcutta High Court directives during a student wing rally on Friday.

The case was lodged at Hastings Police Station on August 28 following a formal complaint by Sub-Inspector Apu Baidya. The complaint alleges that Banerjee and organizers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad foundation day event entered into a criminal conspiracy that resulted in direct non-compliance with the court-mandated conditions set for the gathering on Cathedral Road in central Kolkata.

According to police accounts, the gathering turned disorderly when party supporters breached barricades, jostled with on-duty security personnel, and obstructed vehicular movement along a flank of Cathedral Road that had been ordered to remain open for traffic. The complaint further states that the rally exceeded its designated time limit, resulting in significant congestion and public inconvenience.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier granted conditional permission for the student wing’s anniversary programme, with Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directing organizers to cap attendance at approximately 1,500 people and mandating police to maintain smooth traffic flow and public order. Investigators confirmed that the case has been registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to criminal conspiracy, disobedience to lawful orders, obstruction of public ways, and assault or use of criminal force against public servants.
