Alwar (Rajasthan): A devastating accident on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway claimed five lives after a moving car caught fire in Rajasthan’s Alwar district late Wednesday night. One person survived but suffered critical burn injuries, police confirmed on Thursday.

The incident occurred near Maujpur when the victims were returning from a धार्मिक यात्रा to Vaishno Devi. According to officials, the vehicle suddenly went up in flames, leaving those inside with little chance to escape.

Emergency services, including fire tenders, were rushed to the scene and managed to douse the blaze within minutes. However, the car was completely destroyed by the time the fire was brought under control.

Authorities said the deceased included three women, a man, and a minor girl. All victims were residents of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh. Due to the intensity of the fire, only charred remains could be recovered. Officials have stated that DNA testing will be conducted to formally establish their identities.

Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire. Investigators believe the situation worsened rapidly because the vehicle was powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), which may have accelerated the spread of flames.

The driver, identified as Vinod Kumar Mehar, managed to jump out of the burning car but sustained nearly 80 percent burns. He was initially treated at a nearby health facility before being shifted to Jaipur for advanced medical care.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
