Punjab Sees Cooler Day as Storm Alert Persists; Gusty Winds and Showers Likely

Chandigarh: Weather conditions across Punjab and Chandigarh remained unsettled on Thursday, with authorities continuing a yellow alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and scattered rainfall in several districts.

A slight dip in temperature has brought some relief, with the state recording a marginal fall of nearly one degree compared to the previous day. Despite this decline, Bathinda remained the hottest location, registering a maximum temperature close to 39°C.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s regional centre, wind speeds may reach up to 40–50 km/h in parts of the state, accompanied by lightning and brief spells of rain. No heatwave conditions are expected at present, though changing weather patterns are likely to continue over the coming days.

Rainfall activity has been reported in isolated pockets, with areas like Pathankot receiving measurable showers, while several other districts witnessed overcast skies and cooler conditions. More rainfall is forecast across multiple regions, including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Patiala.

Meteorologists attribute the shift to an active western disturbance influencing northwestern India, along with a developing low-pressure system and cyclonic circulation over the region. These systems are expected to sustain cloud cover, winds, and intermittent rainfall through early May.

Looking ahead, weather officials predict fluctuating temperatures, with a slight rise possible over the next few days before another dip later. Additional rainfall and thunderstorms are also expected between May 2 and May 5, particularly in northern districts.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of strong winds and lightning, even as the recent change in weather offers relief from the earlier spell of intense heat.
