Sydney/New Delhi: Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after undergoing a minor surgical procedure to treat injuries sustained during the third One-Day International against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the 30-year-old cricketer is now stable and recovering well.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the BCCI said, “He (Iyer) is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his progress, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.”
Injury During the Third ODI
Iyer suffered a blunt injury to his lower left rib cage while making a valiant diving attempt to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling during the final ODI held on October 25. The impact led to a laceration of his spleen and internal bleeding, prompting immediate medical attention on the field and subsequent hospitalization in Sydney.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia elaborated, stating, “The injury was promptly identified, and the internal bleeding was successfully controlled through a minor procedure. He has received the necessary medical care and will continue to be monitored closely.”
Recovery and Return Plans
According to the BCCI, Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before flying back to India once declared fit for air travel. However, he is expected to miss at least the next two months of cricketing action, which likely rules him out of the early stages of India’s upcoming home series.
Saikia also extended appreciation to the medical teams involved in Iyer’s treatment: “The BCCI sincerely thanks Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, as well as Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring the best possible care for Shreyas.”
Road to Recovery
Iyer’s injury is a setback both for him and Team India, as he has been a key middle-order contributor in the ODI format. The medical team remains optimistic about his full recovery, emphasizing that he will return to competitive cricket only after regaining complete fitness.
Fans and teammates have taken to social media to send their best wishes to the Mumbai batter, who is known for his resilience and commitment on the field.
With his discharge marking the first step toward recovery, the cricket fraternity remains hopeful that Shreyas Iyer will make a strong comeback once he completes his rehabilitation and medical review.
