Chandigarh: A low-intensity blast outside the Punjab unit office of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening has triggered a multi-agency investigation, though no injuries were reported.

Police officials said the explosion occurred around 5 pm in the parking area of the premises. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur, preliminary findings suggest that a crude explosive device was thrown towards the building but failed to land inside the compound.

Eyewitnesses indicated that the device instead fell onto a pile of sand, reducing its impact. However, the blast caused damage to a scooter and a nearby car parked at the site.

Security forces responded swiftly, sealing off the area within minutes. Personnel from the Border Security Force and local police were deployed to secure the surroundings, while a bomb disposal squad conducted a thorough search operation. A team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory was also called in to collect evidence.

The National Investigation Agency has joined the probe to examine the nature of the attack and identify those responsible.

The banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International has claimed responsibility for the incident. In a message circulating online, an individual associated with the group alleged that the act was carried out in response to recent police action in Punjab.

Officials confirmed that a case has been registered against unknown individuals, and investigations are underway to verify the authenticity of claims and trace the perpetrators. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while security measures have been intensified across sensitive locations in the region.
