Kathmandu: Nepal is continuing to deal with the devastating impact of last month’s flash floods, with authorities reporting 1,453 deaths and more than 5,000 people still unaccounted for.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,451 bodies have been recovered, while two additional victims died during treatment. Rescue teams have so far managed to bring 13,795 people to safety.

More than a thousand displaced survivors remain in temporary accommodation. Authorities said 1,113 people are currently staying at 21 holding centres, including residents from Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Dhading.

The disaster began on August 26 after flash floods developed near the Nepal-Tibet border. Floodwaters then travelled downstream through the Bhotekoshi River, causing widespread destruction across several communities.

The force of the flooding swept away houses, vehicles and key infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Hydropower facilities in the affected region also suffered significant damage.

Rasuwa and surrounding areas were among those heavily affected, leaving many residents displaced and separated from their families. Rescue teams have continued efforts to locate people who remain missing while authorities work to provide shelter and other assistance.

A month after the disaster, the scale of the missing-persons figure remains a major concern for officials. Recovery operations are continuing alongside efforts to assess the damage and restore essential infrastructure in the affected districts.

The disaster has left communities facing a long rebuilding process as Nepal works to recover from one of its most severe recent flood emergencies.
