Chandigarh Implements New Rules for Feeding Stray Dogs Amid Rising Rabies Cases

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) has taken a major step to regulate the feeding of stray dogs in the city, following a rise in rabies cases and directives from the Supreme Court. Under the new rules, residents will no longer be allowed to feed stray dogs outside their homes, on streets, or at any unauthorized location. Violators of this rule will face heavy fines.

The CMC has identified 200 fixed feeding points across the city under the ‘Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Pet and Community Dog Bylaws–2025’. Each sector will have approximately 4 to 5 designated locations. These points were chosen after field surveys, considering road safety, human movement, and stray dog behavior to prevent future conflict situations.

Residents, RWAs, and social organizations have been invited to provide suggestions or objections regarding the designated feeding points within the next seven days. Suggestions must include rationale, and proposed sites should be away from playgrounds, free from traffic hazards, and already frequented by dogs.

To check the feeding point in their sector, citizens can visit the official website, where a list of all points along with landmarks and GPS locations has been uploaded. Residents can click on the “Draft Community Dog Feeding Points–Public Suggestions Invited” link to view details and the complete policy.

The move follows the Supreme Court’s strict instructions addressing increasing attacks by dogs and rising rabies cases nationwide. The court had mandated that all cities implement sterilization programs and set up designated feeding zones for stray dogs. Acting on this directive, the Chandigarh administration has swiftly implemented the new policy.
