Chandigarh: Student politics will take centre stage in Chandigarh today as Panjab University and eight affiliated colleges conduct their student union elections on August 31. Around 39,000 students at the university campus are expected to exercise their franchise, while nearly 39,000 students in the eight colleges will vote in an election featuring 76 candidates. The elections are being conducted for major student body positions in six colleges. At Dev Samaj College in Sector 45 and PG Government College in Sector 46, polling will be held only for selected posts.
Voting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am, with counting slated to start from 11:30 am. Polling stations have been arranged within the respective academic departments to make it easier for students to cast their votes.
Students will be required to produce their valid university identity cards before voting. Each voter will receive two ballot papers — one for choosing representatives for the principal student union positions and another for electing the Departmental Representative (DR).

Ballot Boxes to Be Shifted to Gymnasium Hall
After polling ends, ballot boxes from different departments will be sealed and moved to the Gymnasium Hall under security arrangements. Counting will be conducted there, with the results for the President, Vice-President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary posts expected later in the day.
The results of the Departmental Representative elections will also be announced after the counting process is completed.
Entire Election Process to Be Videographed
Authorities have made arrangements to videograph the election proceedings. The measure is aimed at maintaining transparency during polling and counting and ensuring that the process is conducted in an orderly manner.
PGI-Side Gate to Remain Closed
As part of the security arrangements, Gate No. 1 on the PGI side of the campus will remain closed from 12 noon to 4:30 pm today.
Entry during this period will be restricted, with only vehicles carrying a valid university parking sticker being permitted onto the campus. Students have been advised to reach their respective polling locations well in advance to avoid inconvenience.
With voting and counting scheduled on the same day, the final results of the PU campus elections are expected to emerge by the evening.
