Navi Mumbai— The Indian women’s cricket team created history on Sunday by winning their first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at DY Patil Stadium. The victory ended India’s 47-year wait for a world title and sparked nationwide celebrations.

Opting to bowl first, South Africa faced a determined Indian batting lineup. Shafali Verma’s explosive 87 set the tone, while Deepti Sharma’s composed 58 and Smriti Mandhana’s elegant 45 strengthened India’s innings. Richa Ghosh added a quick 34 as India posted a commanding 298 for seven wickets. South African bowler Ayabonga Khaka was the standout performer for her side, taking three wickets but receiving little support from others.

Chasing a daunting target, South Africa showed promise early on as captain Laura Wolvaardt struck her second consecutive century of the tournament. However, once she fell, the momentum shifted decisively in India’s favor. The Proteas were eventually bowled out for 246 runs.

Deepti Sharma delivered a stellar all-round performance, claiming five wickets to seal the win, while part-time off-spinner Shafali Verma took two crucial scalps to turn the match India’s way.

Following the historic triumph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash reward of ₹51 crore for the World Cup-winning squad in recognition of their extraordinary achievement.

As celebrations erupted across the nation, the victory was hailed as a landmark moment in Indian cricket history — a symbol of perseverance, teamwork, and excellence on the global stage.
