Glasgow: Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam secured a silver medal in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, delivering a commendable performance despite narrowly missing out on the top podium finish.

Rishikanta made a strong start in the snatch competition, successfully lifting 116 kg, 119 kg, and 121 kg in his three attempts. His final lift of 121 kg set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch category, giving him an early advantage in the competition.

Heading into the clean and jerk segment, the Indian lifter confidently cleared 143 kg on his opening attempt. However, he was unable to complete lifts of 148 kg in his second attempt and 151 kg in his final effort, leaving him with a combined total of 264 kg.

Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohammad Aniq emerged as the gold medallist after finishing ahead of the Indian lifter with an overall superior total, while Joshua Amunga Amboya of Kenya claimed the bronze medal to complete the podium.

Although Rishikanta fell short of the gold medal, his record-breaking effort in the snatch event and silver-medal finish added another significant achievement to India’s medal tally at the Glasgow Games.

The performance has been widely appreciated by the Indian contingent, with sports enthusiasts praising the weightlifter’s determination and composure under pressure. His campaign showcased both consistency and resilience, reinforcing India’s growing strength in weightlifting on the international stage.

Rishikanta’s silver medal continues India’s strong showing at the Commonwealth Games, with athletes from across disciplines delivering notable performances and keeping the country’s medal hopes alive throughout the competition.
