Washington: Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic final that was decided in extra time. Super substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute to hand Spain its first men’s World Cup title in years and complete a historic double alongside the nation’s women’s team.
The final was largely dominated by Spain, who controlled possession and created the bulk of the scoring opportunities throughout regulation time. However, Argentina’s resilient defence, backed by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, managed to keep the match scoreless for 90 minutes despite relentless pressure.
The contest took another turn in stoppage time of the second half when Argentina were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Enzo Fernández received his second yellow card for a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.

Although Martínez produced a string of outstanding saves to keep Argentina in the contest, including a crucial stop from Lamine Yamal’s dangerous free-kick, the defending champions were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle.
The victory marked a landmark achievement for Spanish football, making Spain the first nation to simultaneously hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles.
The championship match concluded the biggest World Cup in history, featuring 48 teams across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The expanded tournament also set a new scoring record, with 308 goals scored across 104 matches.
