Khanna (Punjab): Dense fog caused a major road accident on Sunday morning near village Ajnod in Khanna, resulting in the death of one person and serious injuries to at least five others after multiple vehicles collided on the canal road linking Doraha with Ludhiana.
According to preliminary information, extremely low visibility due to thick fog led to a chain collision involving a truck carrying domestic LPG cylinders, a car, and several other vehicles. The accident occurred when a car suddenly appeared in front of the gas-laden truck near Ajnod village, forcing the truck driver to apply sudden brakes. This caused several LPG cylinders to tumble onto the road.
Vehicles following the truck attempted to stop, but a cement-loaded truck approaching from behind failed to brake in time and crashed into the halted vehicles. The impact led to a pile-up involving multiple vehicles and caused severe traffic disruption in the area.
Panic gripped commuters as LPG cylinders scattered across the road, raising fears of a possible explosion. Eyewitnesses said one cylinder became trapped beneath a vehicle, creating a tense situation at the accident site. Fortunately, no gas leakage or blast was reported.
Police sources said the deceased was attempting to remove a gas cylinder stuck under a vehicle when he was fatally injured during the chaos. The exact circumstances leading to his death are being investigated.
Following the incident, the Road Safety Force reached the spot promptly. Sub-Inspector Sukhdev Singh, along with his team, led rescue operations and ensured that the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Traffic was later cleared, and normal movement was restored after a considerable delay.
Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the sequence of events and have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving during foggy conditions.
