AMRITSAR — Tension gripped the region following the fatal shooting of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh, who was stationed at Gate Hakima police station, late Thursday night. The officer was gunned down around midnight, sending shockwaves through the local police department and leaving his family devastated. Investigators have now recovered the first closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage related to the targeted killing, which captures the suspects fleeing the vicinity on an Activa scooter through the Dana Mandi area amidst regular late-night pedestrian movement.
The brazen attack has sparked speculation regarding cross-border underworld connections, with unconfirmed reports pointing toward the involvement of terror outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) alongside Pakistan-based operative Shahzad Bhatti. Punjab Police authorities have intensified their probe into the incident, launching technical surveillance and forensic sweeps across nearby transit routes to identify and apprehend the assailants seen escaping in the recording.
In response to the tragedy, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav took to social media to announce an ex-gratia financial relief package of ₹2 crore for the bereaved family. The compensation structure includes ₹1 crore provided through official HDFC Bank police welfare insurance coverage, alongside an additional ₹1 crore allocated directly from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. State police leadership assured that the department stands firmly behind the slain officer’s family and reiterated their resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice promptly.
