Tarn Taran: Farmers in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district have announced a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, November 4, against what they describe as a premature halt to paddy procurement. The Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Sangharsh has said farmers will bring their produce and unload it outside the office to register their protest.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the union’s block presidents and core committee members held at Gurdwara Dhan Dhan Baba Deep Singh Ji in Bhikhiwind on Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering, union State General Secretary Dilbagh Singh Darajke accused the Punjab government of going back on its commitments to farmers and agricultural labourers.
He alleged that despite making promises to the farming community, the government had introduced a policy that was disrupting paddy procurement and causing difficulties for farmers.
Why Are Tarn Taran Farmers Protesting?
Darajke said farmers were still bringing their paddy to mandis, while nearly 20 per cent of the crop was either yet to be harvested or remained in the fields.
He alleged that the government was moving to stop procurement before the entire crop could reach the markets, leaving farmers vulnerable to middlemen and financial losses.
“The paddy crop is like a child to the farmer. We have raised it with great care, and now we are being forced to bring it to the Deputy Commissioner’s office,” Darajke said.
The union announced that its members would bring their paddy to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on November 4 and unload it at the gates as a mark of protest.
The announcement comes amid concerns among farmers over the timely procurement of the remaining paddy crop and the difficulties faced by those whose produce has yet to reach the mandis.
