Surrey: A 20-year-old woman of Punjabi origin has made history in Canada’s British Columbia province by becoming the youngest-ever city councillor of Surrey.

Suhana Gill took the oath of office on November 2, joining the newly elected Surrey City Council led by Mayor Doug McCallum. Born and raised in Surrey, Gill has entered municipal politics at an age when many of her peers are still pursuing higher education or beginning their careers.

Gill completed high school at the age of 15 before studying political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). She graduated with a bachelor’s degree at 19.

Her entry into public office follows years of involvement in community initiatives, youth advocacy and public affairs. She has also worked with the House of Commons, participated in CBC News panels and been associated with the non-profit sector.

Gill’s professional experience includes working in real estate, where she gained exposure to housing affordability concerns and the challenges faced by young families trying to establish themselves in the city.

What Were Suhana Gill’s Key Election Issues?

Gill contested the October 17 municipal election as a candidate of the Safe Surrey Coalition, led by Doug McCallum.

Her campaign focused on issues affecting Surrey’s growing population, including housing affordability, infrastructure, public safety, transportation and opportunities for young people.

She argued that the city’s rapid expansion needed to be matched by a responsive municipal administration that addressed the concerns of students, young professionals and young families.

Housing affordability and access to better public transportation were among the issues she highlighted during her campaign.

Gill also emphasised the need for young residents to have a meaningful role in civic decision-making rather than being viewed only as future voters. She positioned her experience as a young Surrey resident as a perspective that could contribute to discussions on the city’s development and long-term priorities.
