Partial traffic movement resumes on Srinagar-Jammu highway after prolonged snow blockade

Srinagar: After remaining shut for over 48 hours due to intense snowfall, the vital Srinagar-Jammu national highway witnessed limited restoration on Sunday, offering relief to hundreds of stranded commuters and transport operators.

Officials said the reopening was gradual, as snowfall continued in parts of Kashmir, including the capital city, slowing down snow removal efforts. Priority was being given to clearing vehicles trapped between the Nashri and Navyug tunnels, where long queues had built up following the closure.

“The road has been opened in a controlled manner. Our immediate focus is on releasing the backlog of vehicles stuck along critical stretches,” a senior traffic department official said, adding that full restoration would depend on weather conditions and road safety assessments.

The 270-kilometre arterial route, which serves as the primary surface link between Kashmir and the rest of the country, was blocked on Friday after heavy snow rendered several sections impassable. The disruption led to significant delays in passenger movement and the transport of essential supplies.

Within Srinagar, light snowfall was recorded during the early morning hours, though urban life remained largely unaffected. Air connectivity also stayed uninterrupted, with officials confirming that flight operations at Srinagar International Airport continued as scheduled and multiple flights landed safely.

Rail services in the region were likewise reported to be running normally, offering an alternative travel option for passengers amid fluctuating road conditions.

Authorities have advised travelers to remain cautious, follow traffic advisories, and avoid unnecessary journeys until weather conditions stabilise and the highway is fully cleared.
