Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day visit to West Bengal on June 20 and 21, his first trip to the state since the BJP’s recent electoral victory. The visit is expected to feature a series of development initiatives, welfare announcements, infrastructure projects and strategic defence milestones aimed at accelerating growth across the state.

The Prime Minister will begin his visit by participating in Paschimbanga Divas celebrations at Tarakeswar in Hooghly district, where he will inaugurate, dedicate and lay the foundation stone for projects related to railways, agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry and rural development.

A major highlight of the visit will be the release of the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. Under the programme, more than ₹18,880 crore will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of over 9.44 crore farmers across the country.

In West Bengal alone, more than 45 lakh farmers are expected to receive over ₹900 crore. With this instalment, the cumulative PM-KISAN disbursement in the state will cross ₹15,000 crore, while nationwide transfers under the scheme since its launch in 2019 will exceed ₹4.46 lakh crore.

The Prime Minister will also launch several agriculture-focused initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), AgriStack under the Digital Agriculture Mission, the National Mission on Natural Farming and the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY).

The rollout of PMFBY in West Bengal is expected to provide crop insurance coverage to nearly 50 lakh farmers across approximately 14 lakh hectares during the 2026-27 season. Crops valued at around ₹28,140 crore are expected to be covered under the insurance scheme.

AgriStack will establish a unified digital platform aimed at streamlining agricultural services such as fertiliser distribution, Kisan Credit Cards, Direct Benefit Transfers and procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system.

Under the National Mission on Natural Farming, 346 natural farming clusters covering 17,300 hectares will be developed across the state. The programme will also establish bio-input resource centres and deploy Krishi Sakhis to encourage sustainable farming practices.

Meanwhile, the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana will focus on improving agricultural productivity, irrigation facilities, post-harvest infrastructure and institutional credit access in the districts of Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar and Jhargram.

In the fisheries sector, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the modernised Fishing Harbour at Fraserganj in South 24 Parganas and a newly constructed fish market at Sainthia in Birbhum district. He will also inaugurate Eastern India’s first Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank for Goats at Haringhata in Nadia district under the National Livestock Mission.

Railway infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹590 crore will also be launched during the visit. Modi will dedicate the Sankrail-Santragachi Link Line Project in Howrah district to the nation, a key project aimed at reducing congestion on one of eastern India’s busiest rail corridors.

Additionally, he will lay the foundation stone for a 300-bed Divisional Railway Hospital at Howrah and a Road Over Bridge connecting Haur and Radhamohanpur in Purba Medinipur district.

Strengthening rural connectivity, the Prime Minister will inaugurate 49 road projects developed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III). The projects cover more than 315 kilometres of road network across various districts of the state.

On June 21, Prime Minister Modi will lead the national celebrations of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Kolkata’s iconic Red Road. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” highlights the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy ageing. Thousands of participants are expected to join the Common Yoga Protocol session.

Another key event during the visit will be the commissioning of three indigenously built naval vessels — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray — at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata.

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the vessels contain over 75 per cent indigenous content and reflect India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The induction of the stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, survey vessel INS Sanshodhak and anti-submarine warfare craft INS Agray is expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime surveillance capabilities, coastal security framework and operational readiness.

With a combination of welfare initiatives, infrastructure expansion, agricultural reforms, defence advancements and political outreach, the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to reinforce the Centre’s development agenda in West Bengal while maintaining the BJP’s momentum in the state following its recent electoral success.
