Mukesh Ambani Unveils Vision for India’s AI and Energy Self-Sufficiency at Reliance AGM

Mumbai: Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani on Friday outlined an ambitious roadmap to position India as a global leader in artificial intelligence and achieve greater energy self-sufficiency, describing both sectors as crucial to the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation.

Addressing shareholders at Reliance Industries’ 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Ambani said India must move beyond merely consuming technologies developed elsewhere and instead emerge as a creator and global leader in innovation.

“I firmly believe that India should not be a mere consumer of AI created elsewhere. It must become a creator, adopter and a global leader in AI,” Ambani said.

Emphasising the strategic importance of technological and energy independence, he stated that both AI self-sufficiency and energy self-sufficiency should become national priorities.

“Maximum energy self-sufficiency and AI self-sufficiency must become our national missions. The success of these missions is critical to the success of Viksit Bharat,” he said.

As part of this vision, Ambani highlighted Reliance’s growing investments in artificial intelligence and clean energy, which he described as key growth drivers for the conglomerate and important contributors to India’s development.

At the centre of Reliance’s AI ambitions is Reliance Intelligence, a platform announced last year and positioned as the company’s newest growth engine.

“Our objective is to build a profitable AI infrastructure, platform and services business serving consumers, enterprises and governments at scale,” Ambani said.

He noted that Reliance has already laid the groundwork for its AI expansion through strategic partnerships with global technology giants including Google, Meta and Nvidia.

“We set out a clear vision, identified the focus areas and began building the right partnerships with Google, Meta and Nvidia. Now we are entering the next phase — execution,” he said.

Drawing comparisons with the digital revolution sparked by Reliance Jio, Ambani said the company’s next mission is to democratise access to artificial intelligence across India.

“A decade ago, Jio promised broadband connectivity to everyone, everywhere, and we delivered on that promise. Today, Reliance Intelligence promises AI to everyone, everywhere, and we shall deliver on this promise too,” he said.

Highlighting the evolution of Jio from a technology adopter to a technology creator, Ambani said Indian engineers now have the opportunity to develop globally relevant innovations from within the country.

“Today, Jio is not merely integrating technology; it is creating original technology,” he said.

Ambani also called on innovators and entrepreneurs to focus on developing responsible and inclusive AI solutions that address real-world challenges.

“Build AI that serves humanity. AI that is powerful, trusted, yet affordable. AI that is fluent in every Indian language,” he said.

He stressed that artificial intelligence should empower people across all sectors of society, including farmers, students, healthcare professionals, workers, entrepreneurs and creators.

“AI that empowers farmers, students, doctors, shopkeepers, workers, creators and families. AI that improves efficiency while creating more opportunities to work and prosper for every Indian. AI that contributes to productivity and job creation,” Ambani added.

Alongside AI, Reliance is also making substantial investments in new energy businesses as part of India’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The company views the sector as a major long-term growth opportunity while contributing to the country’s energy security and self-reliance goals.

Providing additional details on Reliance’s AI strategy, Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani said the company is building sovereign AI capabilities at scale.

“This capacity places Reliance amongst the largest AI infrastructure platforms being built anywhere in the world,” Akash Ambani said.

The announcements underscore Reliance Industries’ plans to play a leading role in shaping India’s future in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and sustainable energy, while supporting the broader vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
