New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to travel to Canada around December this year, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed, pointing to steady momentum in ongoing bilateral trade negotiations.
Speaking on Tuesday on the sidelines of the high-level United Nations General Assembly session in New York, Prime Minister Carney addressed queries regarding the state of bilateral relations, a proposed free trade agreement, and the timeline for Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit.
Carney highlighted that Ottawa and New Delhi are making substantive headway in their trade talks, describing the bilateral partnership as exceptionally critical across diplomatic, security, economic, and people-to-people channels. Both leaders had previously resolved at last year’s G20 Summit to push toward concluding trade negotiations ahead of this year’s summit.
The upcoming G20 leaders’ gathering is scheduled to take place on December 14–15 in Doral, Florida, hosted by United States President Donald Trump. Prime Minister Carney noted that Indian authorities recently indicated Prime Minister Modi would visit Canada around that timeframe, adding that while the specific itinerary remains under finalization, he looks forward to hosting his Indian counterpart.
Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit to Canada took place in June 2025 for the G7 Summit, following an official invitation from Prime Minister Carney, who assumed office in March 2025 succeeding Justin Trudeau. Economic ties between the two nations remain substantial, with bilateral trade in goods reaching 8.6 billion USD in 2024, alongside two-way services trade valued at 14.3 billion USD.
