Guwahati: A man accused of decapitating his newly wedded wife died in the early hours of Monday after leaping from a moving police vehicle while being transported to a hospital in Guwahati. The deceased, identified as Ramanuj Goswami, sustained fatal head injuries during the escape attempt, according to Assam Police officials.
The incident occurred while police personnel were escorting Goswami from a local police station to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Authorities stated that the accused suddenly leaped out of the vehicle, rolled down a steep hilly embankment, and struck his head against a hard object. Officers retrieved him and rushed him to the facility, where attending medical staff declared him brought dead at 3:41 a.m. GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury confirmed that the patient arrived as a traffic accident case with no bullet wounds on his body, noting that the exact cause of death will be established through an autopsy.
Goswami, a native of Dhubri district, had been taken into custody last week after turning himself in and confessing to the gruesome killing of his wife, Riya Talukdar. The couple had been married for under a year before a dispute over an alleged extramarital affair led to the homicide. Investigators subsequently recovered the victim’s severed head concealed inside a polythene bag within a refrigerator at the couple’s Guwahati residence. Local authorities have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the prisoner’s transit and subsequent death.
