Delhi: A shocking murder case has surfaced from Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, where a man allegedly died after being set on fire inside a residential building. Police have detained the victim’s wife and mother-in-law for questioning as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident took place late Monday evening in North-West Delhi and triggered panic among residents after screams and reports of fire drew attention to the house.
According to eyewitnesses, people initially believed the blaze had erupted due to a short circuit or an external fire source. However, moments later, they discovered that the victim himself was engulfed in flames inside the building.
A resident of the house said they rushed outside after hearing commotion and saw the severely burnt man stumbling down the staircase before collapsing at the entrance.
Witnesses said the victim was completely naked and had sustained extensive burns across his body.
Despite his condition, he reportedly remained conscious for several minutes and gave a statement before losing strength.
Residents immediately contacted police and arranged for medical assistance after reportedly failing to connect with the emergency helpline initially.
A local police officer reached the spot and recorded the victim’s statement on a mobile device before he was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
In his final account, the man allegedly accused his wife and mother-in-law of setting him on fire.
He also reportedly claimed that two or three other individuals may have assisted in the act.
According to witnesses, the victim further alleged that disputes had emerged over his wife’s alleged relationship with other men.
Residents claimed that when family members were informed, the wife allegedly refused to come downstairs and made no effort to assist him.
The injured man later succumbed to his burns during treatment.
Following the death, police detained the victim’s wife and mother-in-law for sustained interrogation.
Investigators are now examining possible motives, including domestic conflict and allegations of extramarital involvement.
Forensic teams have inspected the scene and collected evidence from inside the house.
Police officials said statements from neighbours and digital recordings of the victim’s allegations will form a crucial part of the investigation.
A case has been registered, and authorities are working to establish whether additional suspects were involved in the alleged killing.
