New Delhi: Customs officials have successfully intercepted and seized over 15 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed with an estimated street value of ₹5.56 crore from two Indian passengers. The incident occurred at the airport on Tuesday following a routine security check on international arrivals. The suspects were arriving back from Bangkok when their luggage caught the attention of vigilant security personnel during routine scanning procedures.
According to an official statement, the breakthrough happened during standard X-ray screening when officials noticed highly suspicious images within the baggage of the two travellers. A subsequent and detailed physical examination led to the discovery of nine polythene packets packed with a green-coloured narcotic substance. Diagnostic testing performed at the scene confirmed the contraband to be high-grade ganja or marijuana.
Smugglers had hidden seven of the illicit packets inside a black trolley bag, while the remaining two packets were recovered from a separate brown backpack. The total net weight of the confiscated narcotics came out to 15.93 kilograms. Officials noted that the seized material consists of hydroponic weed, a high-potency and premium variety of cannabis cultivated indoors using nutrient-rich water solutions instead of traditional soil.
Customs officers immediately confiscated the entire haul along with the packing materials under the strict statutory provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Both passengers were arrested on the spot for their direct involvement in the drug smuggling offence and are currently undergoing further interrogation to trace the broader network behind the shipment.
