Chandigarh: In a major operation against organised crime, Chandigarh Police arrested three alleged members of the Bambiha gang following a brief encounter near ISBT Sector 43 late Tuesday.
Officials said the suspects were intercepted during a targeted operation based on intelligence inputs about their movement in the city. When police attempted to stop them, the accused allegedly tried to escape, leading to an exchange of fire.
The police team swiftly overpowered and arrested all three suspects at the spot. No major injuries to police personnel were reported during the operation.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested men are believed to be active shooters associated with the notorious Bambiha gang, which has been linked to several criminal activities across Punjab and neighbouring regions.
Sources said the trio was allegedly planning major attacks in the Tricity region, but their plans were disrupted due to the timely intervention of law enforcement agencies.
Following their arrest, the accused were taken into custody for sustained interrogation. Investigators are now trying to establish their recent movements, possible local contacts and the larger network backing their operations.
Police are also probing whether the suspects had specific targets in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula and if additional gang members are currently active in the area.
Senior officers described the arrests as a significant success in Chandigarh Police’s ongoing crackdown on organised crime and gangster networks operating in North India.
Security agencies are now examining digital devices, call records and other evidence recovered from the accused to uncover forward and backward links in the case.
Authorities said more arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
The operation has once again highlighted rising concerns over gangster-linked activities in the region, even as police maintain that strict surveillance and intelligence coordination continue to keep such threats under control.
