Delhi Enforces Ban on Older Commercial Vehicles to Curb Pollution

Delhi: The national capital has implemented a ban on the entry of commercial goods vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-4 emission standards, starting Saturday. Vehicles with BS-3 or lower standards are now prohibited from entering the city, a move aimed at reducing pollution levels.

The Delhi Transport Department, working alongside the traffic police, has set up 23 enforcement teams at key entry points to monitor compliance. These include major borders such as Kundli, Tikri, Rajokri, Aya Nagar, Kalindi Kunj, Auchandi, Mandoli, Kapashera, and Bajghera Toll/Dwarka Expressway.

Authorities estimate that 50,000 to 70,000 commercial vehicles fall below the BS-4 emission standard and will be affected by the ban.

Vehicles that will not face restrictions include commercial goods vehicles registered in Delhi, BS-4 compliant vehicles, as well as those running on CNG, LNG, or electricity.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) approved this measure during its October 17 meeting, citing the urgent need to tackle the city’s persistent air pollution problem. Officials say the ban is part of a broader effort to improve air quality and promote cleaner transport within the capital.
