Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government’s maiden Budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, outlining a series of structural financial reforms and social welfare commitments. Delivering the revised budget speech, Wilson praised Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for introducing complete transparency in state administration and successfully halting Commission practices and kickbacks in government tendering processes. The Finance Minister emphasized that eliminating intermediary cuts in public contracts marks a significant victory in providing clean governance and managing the state’s ongoing fiscal challenges.

In his address, Wilson highlighted that the administration is executing a multi-pronged strategy to steer Tamil Nadu out of a severe financial crunch inherited from previous regimes. As part of its policy roadmap, the TVK government formally reiterated its opposition to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), urging the Central Government to abolish the standardized medical entrance exam and revert to the traditional admission framework based on Class 12 public examination marks. To boost state revenues, the government announced new fiscal measures, including a special levy on liquor manufacturing units expected to generate additional revenue alongside a Revenue Enhancement Committee.

The budget unveiled significant allocations across core sectors, placing heavy emphasis on education, youth development, and welfare schemes. Key announcements included an allocation of 44,527 crore rupees for school education, 2,000 crore rupees for the ‘Vettri’ laptop distribution scheme for college students, 812 crore rupees for wedding assistance providing brides an eight-gram gold coin and silk saree, and 560 crore rupees for gold rings distributed to newborns in government hospitals. Additionally, the state announced plans to establish India’s first dedicated AI and innovation city, named ‘Arivagam’, aiming to expand technological infrastructure while progressively fulfilling electoral promises.
