Uttarakhand: A tense situation unfolded along the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border late Thursday after a group of Nihang Sikhs attempting to travel towards Hemkund Sahib crossed police barricades at the Kulhal checkpoint, triggering a major security response from the state administration.
Authorities had strengthened security arrangements ahead of the march after receiving intelligence about the group’s planned entry into Uttarakhand. Multiple layers of barricades, along with a large deployment of police personnel and senior administrative officials, had been positioned at the border to prevent any escalation.
Despite the security measures, a section of the protesters managed to push through the barricades during a confrontation with police and continued moving towards the pilgrimage route. Officials said efforts were immediately launched to bring the situation under control while ensuring that law and order was maintained.
According to police officials, negotiations were held with representatives of the group before the confrontation, but the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough. The protesters insisted on continuing their journey and demanded the release of four Nihang Sikhs who were arrested earlier this month following a clash in Karnaprayag.
Members of the group maintained that their objective was to undertake a peaceful religious pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib. They also expressed hope that the dispute linked to the earlier incident could be resolved through dialogue rather than further confrontation.
The latest standoff is rooted in tensions arising from a June 16 altercation in Karnaprayag, where a disagreement between local residents and a group of Nihang Sikhs reportedly turned violent. Police subsequently registered a case and arrested four individuals, a move that sections of the Sikh community have criticised as being one-sided.
Visuals from the border showed heavily armed police personnel standing guard behind reinforced barricades while officials monitored the movement of the procession. The security build-up transformed the normally busy crossing into a restricted zone as authorities worked to prevent any untoward incident.
Senior police officers said the administration’s priority remained maintaining peace while balancing public safety with the rights of pilgrims. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, and authorities are closely monitoring developments as the situation continues to evolve.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges of managing religious processions amid ongoing legal disputes, with officials urging all stakeholders to resolve differences through lawful and peaceful means.
