Kerala: Authorities in Palakkad district have taken a woman into custody after she reportedly confessed to drowning her two young children in a domestic water storage tank. The incident, initially reported as a double accidental drowning, occurred at a rented residence in Koorankad, near Menonpara in the Kozhinjampara region. The deceased siblings have been identified as five-year-old Jennifer Juliet and her three-year-old brother, Robin Christopher.
According to police sources, the children’s mother, Nivedya, initially claimed that the siblings had been playing inside the house while she was attending to domestic chores. She told investigators that after noticing an unusual silence, she searched the premises and discovered both children submerged and unresponsive inside a concrete water tank located in the bathroom. The youngsters were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility, where attending doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
Investigators initially registered a case of unnatural death under the assumption of accidental drowning, but substantial inconsistencies quickly surfaced during the physical inspection of the scene. Family members and local residents raised doubts about how two children could have simultaneously climbed into the relatively small, partially filled tank without any warning signs or attempts to escape. Furthermore, investigators noted that the five-year-old would have ordinarily possessed the physical capacity to resist or avoid drowning in the shallow structure, casting serious doubt on the initial sequence of events.
Subsequent questioning and forensic evaluation prompted Nivedya to confess to the crime. While the children’s father, John Kumar, had not initially suspected foul play, he later expressed concerns regarding the circumstances of their deaths. Investigators are continuing their interrogation to firmly establish the motive behind the killings and are examining whether external pressures or domestic issues played a role in the incident.
