New Delhi: Veteran actor and parliamentarian Hema Malini became emotional while accepting the Padma Vibhushan on behalf of her late husband Dharmendra at the Padma Awards ceremony held on May 25.
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram after the event, Hema Malini described the occasion as one of the most emotional moments of her life, saying she felt Dharmendra’s presence beside her while walking towards the stage to receive the honour.
The actor recalled sitting among the award recipients during the ceremony and feeling immense pride as the country recognised Dharmendra’s contribution to Indian cinema and society with one of India’s highest civilian honours.
Reflecting on their decades-long journey together, Hema Malini spoke about the memories that resurfaced during the event — from their years as celebrated co-stars in Hindi cinema to their personal life as husband and wife. She revealed that the moment left her overwhelmed with emotion and brought tears to her eyes.
In her note, she described Dharmendra not only as a legendary actor but also as a caring family man, mentor and trusted companion. She praised his kindness, generosity and the affection he received from colleagues, friends and admirers throughout his life.
Hema Malini also acknowledged the love and support shown by millions of Dharmendra’s fans over the years, saying she accepted the Padma Vibhushan with humility on behalf of the entire family and those who admired him.
Calling him her “wonderful soulmate,” she expressed gratitude for the memories they shared and said his presence would continue to remain with her forever.
Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic stars, passed away on November 24, 2025. His contribution to Indian films spanning several decades continues to be remembered by audiences across generations.
