New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pushed back against suggestions of rising anti-India sentiment in the United States, stating that President Donald Trump maintains strong regard for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking during his visit to India on Monday, Rubio said that Trump remains “a big fan” of both India and its Prime Minister, and dismissed the controversy that emerged following remarks he made in response to questions about alleged racist commentary targeting Indians in the US.
The clarification comes after a portion of Rubio’s interaction with reporters went viral on social media, sparking debate over whether there was an increase in anti-India rhetoric in American public discourse. The discussion was further amplified by references to earlier political remarks attributed to Trump concerning immigration and citizenship policies.
Rubio said his presence in India reflected the importance the US administration places on bilateral relations, adding that high-level diplomatic appointments also indicate Washington’s intent to strengthen ties with New Delhi.
He further suggested that some of the concerns being raised were based on comments circulating online, noting that the digital space often contains unverified or exaggerated statements. According to him, it is sometimes unclear whether such voices represent real individuals or coordinated narratives.
During the exchange, Rubio also questioned the context of the allegations, asking the reporter to specify which comments were being referred to. He added that when pressed for clarification, the question did not point to any specific verified incident.
The US State Department briefly shared Rubio’s remarks on social media before later removing the post, adding further attention to the developing conversation.
Reiterating his stance, Rubio stated that isolated or offensive remarks made by individuals should not be interpreted as the position of an entire country, saying that “every society has irresponsible voices.”
His comments were aimed at easing diplomatic tensions as he continues his multi-day visit to India, which is focused on reviewing and strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The episode has drawn attention amid broader discussions on immigration, public rhetoric, and the evolving tone of US-India relations, which both sides have described as a key global partnership.
