Delhi: In a major step toward clean urban transport, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has introduced an advanced hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area of the national capital.

The eco-friendly initiative has been launched jointly with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas as part of efforts to promote sustainable public mobility solutions.

Under the programme, Indian Oil Corporation Limited has supplied two hydrogen-fuel-cell buses to DMRC. Each vehicle can accommodate 35 passengers and is equipped with GPS-enabled tracking technology along with CCTV surveillance systems to ensure passenger safety, route monitoring and operational efficiency.

Officials said the buses are designed to provide smooth and zero-emission transport while showcasing the potential of hydrogen as a future-ready clean energy source for mass transit systems.

The shuttle facility will operate on all working days from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays, and will cater primarily to office commuters during high-demand periods.

Morning operations will run from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, while evening services will remain available between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm.

The project is being viewed as a pilot for integrating hydrogen-based mobility into urban public transport infrastructure and aligns with India’s broader mission of reducing carbon emissions and accelerating the adoption of alternative fuels.

Transport officials said the service will also help assess operational feasibility, commuter response and long-term scalability for wider deployment across major city routes in the future.
