Chandigarh: Tensions have escalated in Punjab after several senior political figures reportedly received threats allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, following their opposition to a documentary centred on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

Senior Congress leader and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa claimed he received a threatening message after publicly objecting to the release of the documentary titled “Lawrence of Punjab.” He said the matter has been brought to the attention of Punjab’s Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav.

Raising serious concerns, Randhawa questioned how individuals lodged in high-security prisons could allegedly continue to exert influence outside. He pointed to the incarceration of Bishnoi in Sabarmati Jail and also referred to gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is currently held in Dibrugarh Jail, alleging that criminal networks remain active despite strict custody.

Apart from Randhawa, similar threatening messages were reportedly sent to Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Balkaur Singh, among others. The messages are said to have been circulated via WhatsApp, triggering concern across political circles.

Responding to the developments, Warring reaffirmed his party’s stand against organised crime, stating that eliminating gangster influence from Punjab remains a key priority. He emphasized that political pressure or threats would not deter efforts to address the issue.

The controversy comes amid growing opposition from leaders across parties against the proposed documentary. Following widespread objections, the central government has reportedly initiated steps to block its release.

The incident has once again brought the issue of organised crime and prison security into focus, with calls for stricter enforcement and monitoring of criminal networks operating from behind bars.
