US-Iran Peace Accord Set for June 19 Signing in Switzerland; Pakistan Claims Key Mediation Role

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the United States and Iran have successfully concluded negotiations on a peace agreement, with the formal signing scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 19.

Sharing the development through a post on social media early Monday, Sharif said the two countries had agreed to bring military hostilities to a complete and permanent end. According to him, the understanding extends to all active theatres of conflict, including Lebanon, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough after months of escalating tensions.

The Pakistani Prime Minister praised Washington and Tehran for opting for dialogue over confrontation and acknowledged the contribution of several regional partners in facilitating the negotiations. He expressed gratitude to Qatar for its mediation efforts while also recognizing the diplomatic support extended by Saudi Arabia and Türkiye during the peace process.

Sharif stated that a series of preparatory meetings would be conducted before the formal signing ceremony to finalize implementation mechanisms and technical arrangements necessary for putting the agreement into effect.

The announcement follows a similar statement by US President Donald Trump, who indicated that the peace accord would soon be formalized, raising hopes of greater stability in the region and easing concerns in international energy markets. However, the complete framework and provisions of the agreement have not yet been made public.

Iran also acknowledged the development, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirming that an agreement had been reached. He clarified that Tehran would begin implementing its commitments only after the official signing ceremony scheduled for Friday.

Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran, reportedly working alongside Qatar to sustain diplomatic engagement. Earlier mediation efforts had resulted in a temporary ceasefire that was repeatedly extended to create space for negotiations.

The development has also been welcomed by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who described the agreement as a constructive step toward reducing regional tensions through diplomacy.

In his statement, Bilawal commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his leadership and credited Pakistan’s diplomatic establishment, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and officials of the Foreign Office, for their sustained efforts behind the scenes. He also acknowledged the role of military leadership in supporting initiatives aimed at promoting regional peace.

The peace initiative comes against the backdrop of a devastating conflict that erupted earlier this year, resulting in significant casualties and the loss of several senior Iranian officials. The war dramatically altered Iran’s leadership structure, with Mojtaba Khamenei assuming the role of Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since the transition, Mojtaba has maintained a low public profile.

While optimism surrounds the upcoming signing ceremony, observers remain focused on the details of the agreement and the challenges involved in translating diplomatic commitments into lasting peace on the ground.
