Chandigarh: The Union Territory has begun an extensive voter verification campaign under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, marking the first large-scale door-to-door electoral roll verification in nearly 24 years. Election officials aim to update voter records, correct discrepancies and ensure the electoral database is accurate ahead of future polls.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit households across the city over the next month to verify voter details, collect necessary information and assist eligible residents in updating or enrolling their names in the electoral roll.
In a move aimed at simplifying the process, the Election Department has clarified that voters whose names were registered before 1987 will not be required to furnish documents related to their parents or grandparents. Basic family-related records will be considered sufficient for verification. Likewise, first-time voters and those seeking inclusion in the electoral list can complete the process by presenting valid government-issued identity documents.
Residents Advised to Keep Documents Ready
During the verification exercise, BLOs will check details including names, age, residential address, family relationships and voter identification records. Citizens have been advised to keep essential documents readily available, such as proof of identity, age certificate and address proof, especially if they wish to correct existing entries or register a family member who has recently become eligible to vote.
Officials said the campaign is designed to improve the accuracy of the voter database while making the verification process more accessible and transparent.
Timeline for the Revision Exercise
According to the Election Department’s schedule, preparatory work, including staff training and printing of forms, has already been completed. The field verification and registration process will continue from June 15 to July 14.
The draft electoral roll is scheduled to be published on July 21, after which citizens will have one month to file claims or objections. The deadline for submitting corrections or appeals will be August 21, while authorities expect to complete the disposal of all claims by September 18.
The final electoral roll for Chandigarh will be published on September 22, 2026, reflecting all approved additions, deletions and corrections made during the revision process.
Election officials have urged residents to cooperate with visiting BLOs and participate actively in the verification drive to ensure their voting rights remain protected and their details are accurately recorded.
