Washington DC: US President Donald Trump has suffered a major political setback after the Democratic Party took control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, ending the Republican Party’s hold over the chamber.
Trump has said he accepts the election results and is willing to work with Democrats. In an interview with The New York Times, he said his administration would look forward to working with the opposition party and would try to reach an understanding.
The President, however, maintained that his party would have secured a sweeping victory had he himself been on the ballot. He also thanked American voters and said he had no regrets over the outcome.
Democrats Flip Key Republican Seats
Republicans, who had controlled the House since 2023, failed to protect their narrow majority as Democrats made gains across several states.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were contested in the midterm elections. Before voting, the chamber had 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent member aligned with the Republicans and two vacant seats.
Democrats overturned results in several Republican-held constituencies and put up strong contests in districts where they had not been widely expected to win.
One significant victory came in North Carolina, where Democrats won a constituency that had remained under Republican control for more than 15 years. The party also secured seats in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Colorado.
Redistricting Fails To Prevent Democratic Gains
Republicans had redrawn congressional district boundaries in several states, including Texas and Florida, in an effort to improve their electoral position and strengthen their chances of retaining control of the House.
However, Democrats managed to win some of the newly redrawn constituencies as well. Their victories in districts that had been reshaped to favour Republicans added to the setback for the party.
Economy And Iran War Among Voters’ Key Concerns
The rising cost of everyday goods remained a major concern for American voters during the campaign. Higher household expenses, the war involving Iran and tariffs imposed by the Trump administration also featured prominently in the election debate.
The Republican Party’s inability to retain its narrow majority has dealt a significant blow to Trump’s political position. With Democrats now in control of the House, the balance of power in Congress has shifted, setting the stage for a more challenging final two years of his presidency.
