Guatemalan Authorities Order Evacuations as Fuego Volcano Erupts with Ash and Pyroclastic Flows

Guatemalan: Emergency response authorities in Guatemala ordered the immediate evacuation of several southern communities situated near the Fuego volcano following a sudden surge in eruptive activity on Monday. Claudinne Ogaldes, executive secretary of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), confirmed that volcanic activity initiated early Monday morning and steadily intensified throughout the day. The rapid escalation prompted regional officials to issue mandatory evacuation orders for residents living in vulnerable settlements surrounding the base of the mountain to prevent casualties.

Visual monitoring and live footage from the area captured massive clouds of volcanic ash and superheated gases billowing into the sky, while thick streams of lava and high-speed pyroclastic flows surged down the mountain slopes. Officials from the Guatemalan Seismology, Vulcanology, Weather and Water Institute reported that the eruption reached heightened levels of explosiveness, generating a lava fountain that soared between 200 and 300 metres above the crater rim. In response to the growing hazard, CONRED officially declared an orange alert for surrounding jurisdictions, warning that wind currents were rapidly spreading heavy ash fall toward neighbouring towns and agricultural areas.

Disaster response teams initiated the evacuation of the community of El Porvenir and the hamlet of Las Lajitas as a preventive measure, relocating approximately 50 families, comprising roughly 250 individuals, to temporary emergency shelters. To minimize risks to the public, transportation authorities implemented an immediate full closure of National Route 14, a major highway passing in close proximity to the volcano. Concurrently, the Ministry of Education ordered the suspension of all school classes in nearby municipalities to protect students and staff from potential exposure to falling ash and toxic volcanic emissions.

The Fuego volcano stands as one of the most active geological formations in Central America, with a history of generating dangerous eruptive episodes. Local residents remain particularly vigilant due to memories of the catastrophic eruption in June 2018, which destroyed an entire village, killed hundreds of people, and impacted roughly 1.7 million residents across the region. With memories of past tragedies still fresh and minor eruptive events occurring as recently as last year, emergency management agencies are maintaining a high level of readiness and closely monitoring volcanic indicators to determine whether additional evacuation protocols will be necessary.
