Washington/Islamabad: After over months of conflict between the US and Iran, US President Donald Trump has finally signed the Iran Memorandum of Understanding at the dinner table during the G7 Summit.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the signing of the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and Iran, describing the development as a major diplomatic achievement aimed at ending a period of heightened tensions and promoting regional stability.
According to Sharif, the agreement was signed electronically by the Presidents of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan in its role as mediator. He said the memorandum would come into effect immediately, marking the beginning of a new phase of engagement between Washington and Tehran.
The Pakistani Prime Minister stated that, under the initial provisions of the understanding, Iran would reopen the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, while the United States would lift the naval blockade that had contributed to escalating tensions in the region. He said these steps reflected a mutual commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Sharif congratulated US President Donald Trump for what he described as his emphasis on diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution. He also acknowledged the contributions of members of the American negotiating team, crediting their efforts in helping bring the discussions to a successful conclusion.
The Prime Minister also praised Iran’s leadership for its willingness to pursue a negotiated settlement, expressing appreciation for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He further recognised the role played by Iranian negotiators, saying their persistence and constructive approach had been instrumental in advancing the process.
In his statement, Sharif highlighted the support extended by several regional countries during the negotiations. He thanked the leadership of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their diplomatic engagement and contribution to the peace initiative, describing their involvement as valuable in facilitating dialogue.
The Pakistani leader also made special mention of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, commending his efforts in supporting the mediation process and contributing to what he called a significant step towards regional peace and stability.
Expressing optimism about the future, Sharif said he hoped the memorandum would lay the foundation for stronger cooperation, greater mutual understanding and long-term prosperity across the region. He emphasised that sustained dialogue and collaboration remain essential for addressing complex geopolitical challenges and building lasting peace.
The announcement is expected to draw significant international attention, as observers closely monitor the implementation of the agreement and its potential impact on regional security, global energy markets and future diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran.
